Scuba diving is a type of adventure sport, that welcomes anyone into the world of the ocean and to the beautiful marine life. Even though this is a highly popular sport, there are many misconceptions surrounding it, because of which, many people back away from having this amazing experience even if they can. In fact, sometimes many experienced divers convey a wrong message, either intentionally or unintentionally, that deviates from the actual fact. So here are some of the common myths about scuba diving and the truth behind them, as is put together by a diving school in Gran Canaria.
1. YOU MUST BE AN ADVANCED SWIMMER TO TRY SCUBA DIVING
Not true. As a beginner you don’t have to be able to swim at all. Swimming and diving is two very different things even though they sound very similar. The swimming we do in diving does not have the purpose of keeping our heads above water however we need to be able to move forward which anybody can learn. No matter what your swimming disability could be, there are solutions that will help you in diving.
Getting a qualification in diving is different. Here a swimming test is included and a must to complete. However for this swimming test you do not need to be an advanced swimmer to complete it.
Overall diving is not an excluding sport. We welcome everyone, no matter what swimming skills you might have. You will learn the necessary skills to your personal experience.
2. YOUR SAFETY IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF YOUR GUIDE OR DIVING INSTITUTE
If someone is teaching you an intense sport like scuba diving, then obviously there is a certain responsibility that they bear towards your safety. But the truth be told, you are not any less responsible for it. It’s all about staying within your own training and never overseek your training and experience. If you are a responsible diver and staying in your limits of training, the same will your guide/instructor.
3. ALWAYS UNDER THREAT OF SHARKS
More of a cliche than a myth! First of all, Sharks are an endangered species, encounters are rare. Secondly, not all divie sites are shark places. Usually you find Angel sharks here, that’s rather a harmless species, until and unless you don’t mess with them. In fact it is actually the sharks that are under threat of humans. Still, for the sake of exception, or a miracle, there are safety standards to maintain, and if there is a shark in the horizon, every diver happens to be aware of it.
